The annual exhibition and sale of Canadian Folk Art opens at the Susan Whitney
Gallery on Saturday, April 26 and continues until May 20, 2003.
The Susan Whitney Gallery Folk Art Exhibition once again offers an excellent
selection of early Western Canadian ethnic furniture, textiles, accessories and
contemporary folk art. The items are primarily from Western Canada, created by
Doukhobor, Mennonite, Ukrainian and Hutterite homesteaders. There are also
paintings and sculptures by artists from across the country. The artists
included are Ewald Rentz, Ann Harbuz, Eddie Mandaggio, Robert Vincent, Joe
Sleep, Pierre Corriveau, Ed Larocque, Wilfred Richard, Harvey McInnes, W.C.
McCargar, Jahan Maka, Hudson Langille, Eva Dennis, Wesley Dennis, and Fred
Moulding.
There are many exceptional pieces in the show. One fine example is an extremely
rare Ukrainian handmade pine wood chandelier which holds twenty candles. The
chandelier is dated circa 1930 and comes from a Ukrainian Orthodox church near
Slawa, Alberta. Another example is a Mennonite wardrobe from Winkler, Manitoba.
This impressive piece of furniture is vividly painted and elaborately carved.
There is also a small Doukhobor trunk from Arran, Saskatchewan. The trunk is
decorated with colourful pinwheel motifs. The bracket-type feet are finely
detailed and scalloped.
