The Susan Whitney Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a one
person exhibition "Mostly True Stories" by Jeff Nachtigall. The
exhibition runs from February 21 to March 19, 2003.
Jeff Helmut Nachtigall was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan in 1970. He
earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Regina in 1993
where he studied printmaking and sculpture with Jack Cowin and
Victor Cicansky. After one year in the Master Fine Arts program at
Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, Nachtigall moved to Calgary
where he began to paint on salvaged materials and explore an
automatic, intuitive style. He now makes Regina his home. He has an
impressive resume for such a young artist listing exhibitions across
Canada and the United States.
Mostly True Stories is a series of acrylic paintings on lathe with a strong
narrative element. The content of each painting is determined by the
painting process. “Over the past few years I have developed an intuitive
process that allows me to work in a stream of consciousness”. Popular
culture plays an important role in the development of the subject matter.
Animals and nature frequently appear. Nachtigall grew up with
Saturday morning cartoons filled with talking animals.
These new paintings deal with a method of mark making. The paint is
applied directly from the tube and the mark that is left is somewhat
awkward and messy. The surface of the lathe further impedes the
painting process, allowing unconscious marks and mistakes to be made.
Changes are made throughout the painting process, layers of paint
applied, images and shapes are edited and the final product may turn
out very different from how it began.
